Hey, guys! Happy to see you’re looking to challenge yourself in starting a blog. As a blogger myself I can tell you- it’s lots of fun if you start on the right foot. Here are some things you should know before you dive in:
Choose a blogging platform.
There are many different platforms out there for creating your internet identity, but mostly bloggers tend to focus on either Blogger or WordPress.
WordPress.org and wordpress.com are completely different platforms. WordPress.com is a free blog hosting service. However, it doesn’t allow custom designer theme uploads and has limited editing options. With Worpdress.org, you have a complete control of your blog and its content.
Blogger is an awesome platform for every first-time blogger. It’s free, easy to use and already has Google ads integrated which allows you to start monetizing your blog straight away!
Get custom domain name + hosting (if needed)
If you go with Blogger and don’t want that unprofessional blogspot.com ending to your blog, you should definitely get a custom domain name. It helps you to maintain a better SEO score as well as makes your blog look way more professional. Find out how you can get a custom domain name with your Blogger blog by reading this post HERE.
If you go with WordPress.org, you’ll need a hosting plan too.
I personally can recommend Siteground for getting your blog self-hosted, they have amazing customer service and some really affordable plans, starting from only a few dollars a month! Read: How to Create a Self-Hosted WordPress.org blog in 5 minutes?
Choose a blog design.
If you’re taking this blogging thing seriously, random templates downloaded from the internet just won’t do it. You should absolutely get a professional designer theme and avoid all that coding drama. Take a look at these Premade Blogger Templates or Responsive WordPress Themes & download instantly.
All of our themes come with free installation services, so you can just relax and focus on those future posts!
Write a killer about me page.
It’s super important to introduce yourself right. As soon as your readers reach your blog, they will start looking for info about you in order to decide if they ever want to come back. Write down all the things that make you unique, open up and explain what you’re going to blog about & don’t forget to upload some pictures with that pretty smile of yours!
Go ahead and spread the word around your blog! Use all the social media you have, include some hashtags & share it with your friends. Your family & friends are going to be your biggest fans at the beginning, so don’t be shy and email them with a few links to your latest posts.
Make a plan.
Sit down, take a piece of clean white paper and write down your goals for this blog of yours. Decide how many posts a week you feel comfortable in doing. It’s important to stay consistent, so I’d say- start small. I currently post about 3-4 posts every week and even after 3 years it sometimes feels like a lot of work. Blogging is FUN, but preparing high-quality posts can take a lot of your time. Instead of just posting randomly- prepare a schedule and stick to it.
Set up Google Analytics, so you can follow your progress. It will allow you to see your readers activity within your site and see the growth of your blog.
Whatever you do- don’t forget to enjoy it and most importantly- be yourself!
